PurposeTo study the clinical profile of 389 paediatric uveitis and scleritis patients in a tertiary eye care centre in Eastern India

MethodsRetrospective observational case series between January 2007 and December 2023. Case records were reviewed for the demographic profile, aetiology, complications, management and visual outcome. The diagnosis of uveitis was based on Standardization of Uveitis Nomenclature working group (SUN) diagnostic criteria and scleritis on Watson and Hayreh classification
ResultsThe study included 548 eyes of 389 children, out of which 233(59.9%) were boys and 156(40.1%) girls. Mean age of presentation was 12.21 +/- 3.9 years. Unilateral presentation was noted in 230(59.1%) and bilateral in 159(40.9%) children. Posterior uveitis(251, 45.8%) was the most common anatomically involved uveitis followed by intermediate uveitis(133, 24.3%), anterior uveitis(84, 15.3%) and panuveitis(64, 11.7%). Non infectious causes (238, 61.2%) were more common than infectious(148, 38.1%). The most common systemic association with non infectious uveitis was juvenile idiopathic arthritis(JIA). Toxoplasmosis was the commonest infectious aetiology followed by tuberculosis. Fifteen eyes(2.7%) presented with scleritis. Cataract was the commonest complication followed by glaucoma. The mean follow-up duration was 32.7 months. The mean visual acuities in logMAR at presentation and final visit were 0.8 and 0.6 respectively(p<0.001)
ConclusionIn our cohort, posterior uveitis was the commonest presentation. Non infectious uveitis was more common than infectious. JIA and toxoplasmosis were the commonest causes. Scleritis was not common amongst the paediatric patients seen at our centre
