TitleClinical pattern of retinitis in Behçet disease
PurposeThe aim of this study was to describe clinical features of Behçet retinitis.
MethodsThis is a retrospective descriptive study of 22 patients with Behçet disease presenting with
acute retinitis.
ResultsThe mean patient’s age was 34 years (range, 12–53). There were 14 males (63.6 %) and
8 females (36.36%). Of 22 patients, 19 (86.4 %) had bilateral involvement and 3 (13.6 %) had unilateral involvement. The main presenting symptom was vision loss in 19 patients
(76%). Best-corrected visual acuity was < 20/200 in 10 eyes (40%), between 20/200 and
20/40 in 11 eyes (44%) and over 20/40 in 4 eyes (16%). Retinitis was noted at first
presentation among 20 patients (91%), and occurred during a mean follow up of 12.5 months
among two patients (9%). Panuveitis was the most common form of uveitis (21 eyes; 84%),
followed by posterior uveitis (4 eyes; 16%). Retinitis was multifocal in 15 eyes (60%) and
unifocal in 10 eyes (40%). Retinal infiltrates involved the midperiphery in 14 eyes (56%), the
posterior pole in 9 eyes (36%) and both the midperiphery and posterior pole in 2 eyes (8%).
Lesion size was ≤ 1 disc area in 16 eyes (64%) and > 1 disc area in 9 eyes (36%). There were
associated fernlike retinal vascular leakage on fluorescein angiography in 17 eyes (68%) and
occlusive retinal vasculitis in 9 eyes (36%).
ConclusionBehçet disease retinitis is more likely to occur at first presentation and affects more frequently
midperiphery than posterior pole. It is commonly associated with fern-like capillaritis, and a
subset of eyes exhibits associated occlusive retinal vasculitis.
