Association between Acute Macular Neuroretinopathy and posterior scleritis: a case series
Purpose
To describe a case series of posterior scleritis associated with acute macular neuroretinopathy (AMN) at a referral center.
Methods
This 3 patient case series utilized a retrospective chart review method to investigate the clinical characteristics, diagnostic approaches, and treatment outcomes of patients with a specific medical condition.
Results
Three patients presented with posterior scleritis. The age of the patients ranged from 19 to 30 years, two female and one male . All patients had initially ocular pain. The diagnosis of scleritis was confirmed by ocular ultrasonography. AMN was present on initial examination in one patient and diagnosed secondarily in the other two patients with multimodal imaging. No etiology was found. All patients retained a paracentral scotoma on visual fields persisting despite treatment.
Conclusion
To our knowledge, this is the first case series reporting an association between scleritis and AMN. Although the true pathogenesis of AMN remains unclear, the occurrence of AMN in all three patients without an identifiable underlying cause highlights the potential autoimmune or inflammatory etiology of this disease.
