EVALUATION OF INFLAMMATORY CYTOKINES IN THE UVEITIC GLAUCOMA
Purpose
The evaluation of inflammatory cytokines in the serum and the tears at various stages of uveitic glaucoma (UG).
Methods
The study was conducted on 34 patients with UG in the age from 44 to 58 years in remission of uveitis and compensated intraocular pressure (16 – 19 mmHg).There were 19 women (55.9%) and 15 men (44.1%). All patients underwent standard ophthalmic and laboratory examinations. Patients were divided into two groups with randomized digits table: the group 1 – 18 patients with UG in the moderate stage, the group 2– 16 patients with UG in the severe stage. The inflammatory cytokines – tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 1-ß (IL-1ß) - was measured in the serum and the tears using the enzyme immunoassay method.
Results
In both groups, the average level of TNF-α and IL-1ß was significantly higher than control values. In the tears, the mean value of TNF-ɑ in group 1 was 66.86±3.10 pg/ml; in group 2 – 85.86±5.68 pg/ml (p=0.003; p=0.002); the mean value of IL-1ß in group 1 was 57.33±3.04 pg/ml; in group 2 – 75.64±3.32 pg/ml (p<0.001). The level of TNF-α and IL-1ß in the tears in the severe stage of UG was significantly higher than in the moderate stage (p<0.001). The average level of TNF-ɑ in the serum of patients in group 1 was 20.18±1.55 pg/ml; in group 2 - 24.86±5.61 pg/ml
(p<0.001); the average level of IL-1ß in group 1 was 43.22±5.7 pg/ml; in group 2 – 49.26±4.01 pg/ml (p<0.001).
Conclusion
An increase of TNF-α, IL-1ß can contribute to the disruption of cellular metabolism and microcirculatory disorders, accelerated lipid peroxidation, prostaglandin synthesis and the development of apoptosis. The progression of UG was accompanied by increased of TNF-ɑ, IL-1ß in the tears.
