TitleThe use of Wharton's jelly-derived mesenchymal stem cells (WJSCs) and their conditioned medium (CM) to enhance the corneal nerves regeneration in diabetic rats
PurposeThe aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of using Wharton's jelly mesenchymal stem cells (WJSCs) and their conditioned medium (CM) to regenerate corneal nerves in rats with diabetic keratopathy.
MethodsMale diabetic rats were divided into four groups and received either no treatment, WJSCs, or CM through eye drops. After two weeks of treatment, the researchers examined the rats' corneal sensitivity, epithelial layer integrity, histology, and expression of certain genes and proteins related to nerve growth.
ResultsThe results showed that the WJSC and CM treatments improved corneal nerve regeneration in diabetic rats, as evidenced by increased expression of nerve growth-related genes and proteins and improved corneal thickness.
ConclusionIn conclusion, the WJSCs and their CM have a potential role in corneal nerve regeneration.
