Rho kinase inhibitor, ripasudil reduced intraocular pressure and Medication-score for uveitic glaucoma: two-year outcome
Purpose
The Rho kinase (ROCK) inhibitor ripasudil is a topical agent which reduces intraocular pressure (IOP) by altering the conventional outflow facility. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of ripasudil in reducing IOP and medication scores of a glaucoma medication in patients with uveitic glaucoma.
Methods
The retrospective study included 11 patients (15 eyes) diagnosed with uveitic glaucoma, all of whom took ripasudil eye drops and underwent follow-up observations at least two years after the initiation of treatment. Data obtained from patients’ medical records included IOP and the Medication-score.
Results
The mean IOP (25.8 ± 2.7 mmHg before treatment) significantly decreased the initiation of ripasudil therapy (14.0 ± 3.0 mmHg at three months) and remained stable in low-teens during the two-year follow-up period (p<0.0001). Significant decreases in the Medication Score were observed at 12 months or later after the initiation of ripasudil therapy (p<0.05). Both baseline Medication score and glaucomatous disc change rate were significantly higher in the five eyes that required glaucoma surgery during the two-year observation period than in the 10 eyes that did not require surgery.
Conclusion
Ripasudil was found to be effective in reducing IOP and the Medication-score in uveitic glaucoma patients who underwent a two-year treatment.
