TitleBilateral retrocorneal plaques as a manifestation of herpetic keratouveitis: A case report
PurposeTo describe a case of herpetic keratouveitis manifesting with bilateral retrocorneal plaques.
MethodsA case report
ResultsA 17-year-old patient presented with sudden bilateral redness, photophobia and decreased vision for 4 days. Visual acuity was limited to counting fingers in both eyes. Slit-lamp examination showed perikeratic congestion, keratic precipitates, folds of the Descemet membrane with multiple white retrocorneal plaques, 2+ anterior chamber cells, and posterior synechiae in both eyes. Vitreous and fundus examination was unremarkable in both eyes. Investigational work up was negative. Clinical findings were consistent with the diagnosis of herpetic keratouveitis. The patient was treated with oral antiviral drugs and topical steroids. On follow up, the retrocorneal plaques and inflammatory signs resolved gradually. Visual acuity improved to 20/20 in both eyes.
ConclusionHerpetic keratouveitis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of retrocorneal plaques.
