PurposeTo study clinical features, treatment, recurrences, visual outcome and complications in herpetic ocular infection in a tertiary care center in India.
MethodsRetrospective study from 2011 to 2018
Results130 patients (139 eyes) M:F -3:1 Mean age 42.2 ±17.8 years. Follow up range - 2 days-5 years. 9 patients had bilateral disease. 75.4% patients had HSV, 23% VZV and 1.5% had CMV infection. Decreased vision (95.3%) was the most common ocular complaint. Clinical presentations were non necrotizing stromal keratitis & keratouveitis in 19.15% each, necrotizing stromal keratitis in 17.26%, dendritic keratitis in 6.4%, anterior uveitis in 4.3% & mixed in 15.8%. PCR from corneal scraping was positive in 25 eyes and aqueous fluid in 2 eyes. Patients were treated with oral and topical antiviral drugs along with topical and oral steroids. Final visual acuity improved in 61%. Recurrences were seen in 28.7%. Complications were corneal scar (95%), cataract (18%) and glaucoma (10.7%).
ConclusionHerpetic eye disease is a significant cause of visual impairment. Periodic follow up is mandatory to detect early recurrences and timely treatment.
