Purpose
To describe clinical features and prognosis of endogenous Klebsiella Endophthalmitis
Methods
Restrospective case series of 19 patients diagnosed with Klebsiella endophthalmitis from January 2007 to July 2017 at Yonsei University College of Medicine.
Results
The mean age of 19 patients was 60.4 years. Bilaterality was 26.3%. 89.5% of patients were men. 42.1% of patients were diabetic. All patients had concurrent liver abscess. Hypopyon was present in 57.1% of patients. Of 24 eyes, 15 (62.5%) eyes underwent vitrectomy. The remaining 9 (37.5%) eyes received intravitreal antibiotics only. Only one (4.1%) eye eventually underwent eviceration. 24.1% of eyes showed improvement in visual acuity. 21.7% of eyes had final visual acuity of 20/200 or better. 69.8% of eyes had final visual acuity of HM or less.
Conclusion
Klebsella endophthalmitis typically occurred in middle-age or older diabetic men with liver abscess. Visual prognosis is poor. Ocular screening for early detection of endophthalmitis in patients with Klebsiella sepsis is recommended.
