TitlePhotoreceptor recovery in a child with chronic myelogenous leukemia – A case report
Accept poster if oral is not possible ?Yes
PurposeTo report a child who had chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) related retinopathy with foveal photoreceptors loss; however, it restored after systemic 6-week imatinib mesylate treatment.
MethodsCase record of a 10 years old boy who had CML related retinopathy in eyes and foveal photoreceptors loss in the right eye. Visual acuity, intraocular pressure and the color photos of the fundus were recorded. The spectral-domain optical coherence tomography images of the foveal photoreceptors change in the right eye were also performed.
ResultsA 10 years old boy who had CML was referred to us due to blurred vision in the right eye. Leukemic retinopathy with optic disc edema, retinal hemorrhage, retinal venous tortuosity, cotton-wool spots, perivascular sheathing, and Roth‘s spots in eyes were noted. Furthermore, localized thrombosis with foveal photoreceptors loss with ellipsoid zone disruption and outer retina degeneration in the right eye were also noted. However, after systemic 6-week imatinib mesylate treatment, his best-corrected visual acuity of the right eye was recovered from 0.2 to 1.0 with the leukemic retinopathy relieved. The foveal photoreceptors restoration with continued ellipsoid zone was also noted.
ConclusionThe prompt treatment of the underlying CML could result in the improvement or even resolution of the ocular findings, and foveal photoreceptor loss might be reversible with great visual acuity recovery.
