| Title | Retino-choroidal evaluation of the macular region in eyes with retinal vasculitis using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography |
| Purpose | Analysis of the retino-choroidal angioarchitecture in retinal vasculitis (RV) using swept-source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA). |
| Methods | : Patients with active, partially active and inactive diseases were recruited in this prospective, cross-sectional analysis. Fundus fluorescein angiogram using ultrawide images was captured with Heidelberg Spectralis imaging, to detect the level of activity. SSOCTA (6x6 mm scans centred at the fovea) were captured using PLEX Elite 9000. Study parameters consisted of vessel length density (VLD) and perfusion density (PD) in both the superficial (SCP) and deep capillary plexus (DCP), foveal avascular zone perimeter, circularity and area, and choroidal thickness (CT), choroidal vascularity index (CVI) and choriocapillaris flow deficits (CCFD). |
| Results | The study cohort comprised 123 eyes of 80 patients (mean age ± standard deviation, SD= 37 ± 14 years) [63 males, 17 females], including 22 (31 eyes), 50 (79 eyes) and 8 (13 eyes) in active, partially active and inactive groups, respectively. Retinal VLD and PD were numerically highest in active disease, and lowest in inactive disease. FAZ perimeter and area were least for the active, and greatest for inactive disease. CT and CCFD reduced from the active to partially active groups and then showed the numerically highest values in the inactive group. These differences were statistically insignificant (p>0.05). |
| Conclusion | The capillary loss in eyes with RV appears to be progressive in both retinal and choriocapillaris layers. Furthermore, SSOCTA appears to be beneficial in assessing the retinal and choroidal tissues in various stages of disease activity. |
