TitleInfluence of COVID-19 on the course of endogenous uveitis in children
PurposeTo study the effect of COVID-19 on the course of endogenous uveitis (EU) in children.
MethodsThe course of uveitis after COVID-19 was analyzed in 18 patients aged from 8 to 17 years. Anterior uveitis (AU) was in 10 children, intermediate (IU) - in 5, panuveitis (PU) - in 3. At the time of COVID-19 16 patients were receiving systemic immunosuppressive (IS) therapy, 32 eyes - local corticosteroids. During acute symptomatic COVID-19, IS therapy was temporarily canceled.
ResultsDuring COVID-19 active uveitis was in 17, inactive - in 18 eyes. COVID-19 was mild in 13, asymptomatic - in 4 children, moderate - in 1 child. In 15 patients (32 out of 35 affected eyes) COVID-19 did not affect the course of uveitis. Exacerbation of uveitis was observed in 2 patients: in 1 eye of patient with bilateral idiopathic PU after 4 years of remission and in patient with unilateral JIA associated AU and sluggish inflammation. In 1 patient with indolent idiopathic IU progression of coats-like exudative retinal detachment was observed.
ConclusionIn majority of children (83.3%) COVID-19, which was usually mild or asymptomatic, did not effect the course of uveitis, despite the presence of active uveitis in half of the eyes and temporary cessation of IS treatment. Children with EU should be examined by an ophthalmologist after COVID-19, followed by observation depending on the uveitis activity.
