Title	Non-necrotizing retinitis in varicella-zoster virus: A case report

Purpose	To describe a case of unilateral non-necrotizing retinitis due to varicella-zoster virus (VZV)
Methods	Single case report
Results	A 52-year-old female patient with a past medical history of diabetes mellitus, presented with a progressive pain, redness and vision loss of the right eye (RE). Best corrected visual acuity in the RE was 20/200. Slit lamp examination showed nodular conjunctival lesion with granulomatous anterior uveitis and sectorial iris atrophy. Fundus examination revealed posterior focal retinitis with no retinal necrosis. The left eye was unremarkable. SS-OCT showed no macular edema, but hyper-reflectivity of the inner retinal layers corresponding to the retinal lesions. Fluorescein angiography demonstrated hypo fluorescent lesions with a peripheral hyperfluorescent border in late stages, and late papillary retention. Nodular conjunctival biopsy showed a non-specific fibro-calcific and inflammatory remodeling. An anterior chamber aqueous fluid sample was performed with polymerase chain reaction that revealed the presence of VZV DNA. The Retinitis resolved after systemic acyclovir treatment.
Conclusion	VZV can cause a variety of clinical forms of retinitis ranging from typical acute retinal necrosis to a non-necrotizing types of inflammation, which are uncommon and currently underdiagnosed
