| Purpose | To analyze the distributions, manifestations and treatment of ocular toxoplasmosis in Taiwan. |
| Methods | We reviewed medical records of patients with diagnosis of ocular toxoplasmosis from January 2008 to December 2017 among six medical centers in Taiwan. The laterality, main lesion, treatment regimen, and visual outcome were recorded and analyzed. |
| Results | We recorded total seventy-nine eyes in seventy-two patients with ocular toxoplasmosis in six different medical centers. There were 30 males and 42 females (mean age: 41.11 ±17.43 years), and gender difference was not significant (p=0.2). Median follow-up period was 458 days, and seven patients (9.72%) had bilateral ocular toxoplasmosis, and others (90.28%) had unilateral disease. Among whom posterior uveitis (58.33%) was the most common manifestation, followed by panuveitis (40.28%), just one case presented with anterior uveitis only. The positive rate of anti-Toxoplasma IgG was 88.89%, and nine patients had been detected with anti-Toxoplasma IgM antibody. Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole( or co-trimoxazole) was the most common antibiotics prescribed for ocular toxoplasmosis in Taiwan(86.11%), and other antibiotics were clindamycin, pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine. |
| Conclusion | Ocular toxoplasmosis is not a rare cause of uveitis in Taiwan, although is not very common because Taiwan is not epidemic area. We reported a retrospective, decade series study of ocular toxoplasmosis, and it was also the first multicenter collaborative study for ocular toxoplasmosis in Taiwan. |
