| Purpose | To study the pattern of childhood uveitis in a referral center in Tunisia, North Africa. |
| Methods | Retrospective review of the charts of 138 children (243 eyes) diagnosed with uveitis in the Department of Ophthalmology, Fattouma Bourguiba University Hospital, Monastir, Tunisia, between January 2007 and December 2017. Results of clinical ophthalmic examination and of work-up were recorded. |
| Results | The mean age was 10 +/- 3.5 years. The sex-ratio was 0.9. Uveitis was bilateral in 105 patients (76.6%). Intermediate uveitis was the most common form, found in 51 patients (37.5%), followed by anterior uveitis in 38 patients (27.5%), panuveitis in 35 patients (25.3%) and posterior uveitis in 5 patients (4.7%). Twenty patients (14.5%) had infectious uveitis: herpetic uveitis (5 patients, 3.6%) poststreptococcal syndrome (5 patients, 3.6%), tuberculosis (3 patients, 2.2%), toxoplasmosis (3 patients, 2.2%), and toxocarosis (2 patients, 1.4%). Twenty patients (14.5%) had an underlying systemic disease: sarcoidosis (12 patients, 8.7%), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (6 patients, 4.3%). Vogt–Koyanagi–Harada disease was diagnosed in 12 patients (8.7%) and Fuchs uveitis in 4 patients (2.9%). Uveitis was considered to be idiopathic in 64 patients (46.4%). |
| Conclusion | Uveitis among children is frequently idiopathic. A specific cause may be found in 45-60% of cases. Intermediate uveitis seems to be the leading anatomic form of uveitis. |
