| Purpose | The prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) in Japan was 13.9 per 100,000 people in 2016, which is higher than that in other developed countries. However, no reports have addressed the prevalence of ocular involvement among patients with active TB in Japan. We herein elucidate the prevalence of ocular involvement in patients with active TB. |
| Methods | In this observational study, we reviewed the data of patients with active TB treated at Yoshijima Hospital from April 2017 to July 2018. Anterior chamber cells, vitreous haze, active chorioretinal lesions, and scleral injection were examined to determine the degree of ocular involvement in the patients. |
| Results | A total of 101 patients with TB underwent an ocular examination. The mean age at examination was 69.0 ± 20.8 (range, 19–100) years, and 58 patients were male. Ninety-three patients were Japanese, 2 patients were Filipino, and 2 patients were Chinese. Although no patients complained of ocular symptoms, 7 patients (6.9%) had ocular inflammation. Notably, 6 of these 7 patients were female (P < 0.01). Four patients had bilateral involvement. Three had retinal vasculitis, 2 had anterior uveitis, 1 had chorioretinitis, and 1 had vitritis. All patients with inflammation had active disease. The ocular inflammation was resolved after administration of anti-TB therapy in all affected patients. |
| Conclusion | The incidence of ocular inflammation among patients with active TB in Hiroshima, Japan was higher than that in the United States (1.4%) and almost the same as that in the Philippines (6.8%). |
