An acute zonal occult outer retinopathy associated with a VKH syndrome : a case report
Purpose
Acute zonal occult outer retinopathy (AZOOR) is a presumed inflammatory disorder characterized by loss of outer retinal function. The pathogenesis is uncertain and is mainly attributed to idiopathic origin. Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease is a rare autoimmune disorder that affects melanin pigment-producing melanocytes and mainly affects the pigmented structures such as eyes, ear, skin, meninges, and hair.
Methods
We described hereby the case of an AZOOR that occured in a 60-years-old woman with a history of chronic VKH.
Results
This patient with chronic VKH, complained of blurred and decrease of vision in his right eye.
Funduscopic examination showed a peripapillary area of RPE atrophy. Multimodal imaging showed features of AZOOR. Neoplastic and syphilitic retinopathy were excluded by etiological assessment. To our knowledge this is the first case report describing an association between VKH and AZOOR.
Conclusion
This case sheds lights on the fact that azoor can be associated with other autoimmune conditions, suggesting immune-induced mechanisms with regard to entity origin.
