Title | Ocular hypertension among patients with PCR-proven herpetic anterior uveitis |
Purpose | To report the prevalence of ocular hypertension among patients with viral acute anterior uveitis. |
Methods | Descriptive retrospective study of patients with PCR-confirmed viral acute anterior uveitis. |
Results | Thirty-six patients were included with a mean age of 40.45 +/- 15.32 years. The male to female ratio was 1.4. Ocular hypertension was found in 82.85% of the patients and the mean intraocular pressure (IOP) was 28.33+/-13.24 mmHg. Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1) was the most common agent involved in acute viral anterior uveitis (48.57%), followed by Cytomegalovirus (CMV) (37.14%), and Varicella Zoster virus (VZV) (14.28%). Ocular hypertension was present in 92.3% of patients with CMV anterior uveitis, (mean IOP 30.38+/-12.22), 80% of patients with VZV anterior uveitis (mean IOP 26.33+/-8.52), and 70.59% of patients with HSV1 anterior uveitis (mean IOP 27.47+/-14.82). |
Conclusion | Ocular hypertension is a common feature among patients with virus-induced anterior uveitis. Although HSV1 is the most common virus involved in viral anterior uveitis, CMV induced uveitis are more likely to be associated with ocular hypertension. |
