| Title | Management of retinal detachment in children with Pars Planitis |
| Purpose | Describe surgical approaches in severe and complicated cases of retinal detachment in children with Pars Planitis. Due to the inflammation and ocular signs like cyclic membranes, snowbanks, ciliary body detachments, choroidal detachments and total retinal detachments with proliferative vitreoretinopathy, deciding on the best surgical approach is difficult. |
| Methods | A prospective single center study was conducted at the Asociación para Evitar la Ceguera (APEC) en México, I. A. P. in Mexico City (Association to prevent blindness in Mexico). The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board. Demographic and clinical characteristics were described. Surgical approach was registered (scleral buckle, vitrectomy, intraocular lens and silicon oil), in order to having at the end an attached macula (outcome variable). Variables were compared using the nonparametric Wilcoxon test. Statistical significance was set at p <0.05. Satistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 20 (IBM Corp, Armonk NY, USA). |
| Results | A total of 17 patients (11 male/65%) were included in a two year period (November 2020-22) with a median age of 13 years old (IQR 9-19). Bilateral eye disease in 13 (76%) patients; 9 (53%) patients had systemic immunosuppression. The median follow up time post retinal surgery as 19 months (IQR 9-28). Pre-surgical macula-off was present in 15 (88%) patients and the post-surgical macula-on was present in 10 (59%) patients, p (0.008). The main surgical approach in 12 (70%) patients was scleral buckle/pars plana vitrectomy/silicon oil. |
| Conclusion | A complete surgical approach with scleral buckle/vitrectomy and silicon oil in children with severe retinal detachment associated to Pars Plana is suggested. |
