| Methods | This retrospective case-series enrolled patients with endogenous endophthalmitis from five centers in Taiwan. Demographics, systemic conditions, and ocular presentations were collected and analyzed. |
| Results | A total of 48 patients were included with the mean age of 51 years old and 54.3% male. The average duration of symptom onset to endophthalmitis diagnosis was 5.7 days, and systemic manifestations included fever in 57.8%, WBC average count 14087/mm3, CRP average level 38mg/L, DM in 56.5%. The average hospitalization duration was 37 days with intensive care unit admission in 33.3% and death in 12.8%.
29.5% of patients were diagnosed of endophthalmitis first then found systemic infections.
As for the ocular presentation, 18.8% exhibited bilateral-eye involvement and panuveitis (77.1%) was the major uveitis type, followed by posterior uveitis (18.8%) and intermediate uveitis (4.2%). 52.2% of patients were found hypopyon, 77.1% with vitreous opacity and 31.9% with the complication of retinal detachment. |
| Conclusion | This retrospective, multi-center study provides useful systemic and ocular information about endogenous endophthalmitis in Taiwan. The cooperative care from ophthalmologists and internal medicine physicians is essential. |
