TitleLaser flare photometry in Fuchs uveitis syndrome
Accept poster if oral is not possible ?Yes
PurposeTo evaluate laser flare photometry levels in patients with Fuchs Uveitis Syndrome (FUS) who were followed without treatment. Also, to evaluate flare levels in patients who used topical steriods due to misdiagnosis and compare flare values during steroid treatment and after cessation of steroids.
MethodsThe records of 41 eyes of 36 patients with FUS were retrospectively evaluated. Time delay from onset to diagnosis of FUS, laser flare measurements (KOWA FM-600), history of ophthalmic surgeries and intraocular pressures were recorded.
ResultsMedian delay in diagnosis was 23 months (0-112 months). Bilateral involvement was present in 5 patients (14%). The mean laser flare levels of patients with unilateral involvement were 12.88 ph/ms in the affected eyes and 4.1 ph/ms in the fellow eyes (p˂0.05). There was no increase in flare levels during follow-up (p>0.05). Seventeen patients who had topical steriods due to misdiagnoses were followed up without treatment after the diagnosis of FUS. The mean flare value was not changed significantly 2 months after cessation of steroids (11.9 vs 12.0 ph/ms). Eight eyes with FUS underwent cataract surgery. Mean laser flare levels pre- and 1st postoperative day were 12.9 ph/ms and 17.9 ph/ms respectively (p˂0.05). There was no significant difference between pre- and 1-month postoperative flare levels.
ConclusionThere was no increase in flare values in follow-up period without treatment. Also, there is no increase in flare levels after cessation of steroid treatment. These outcomes justify the follow-up of patients with FUS without treatment. Cataract surgery is safe in patients with FUS.
