| Purpose | To identify and summarize the clinical characteristics and treatment strategies in patients with ocular sarcoidosis in Taiwan population. |
| Methods | A multi-center, 10-year retrospective chart review study from the referral uveitis clinics of 8 medical centers in Taiwan. Patients diagnosed as ocular sarcoidosis (OS) were identified between 2008 to 2017 according to the diagnostic criteria of International Workshop on Ocular Sarcoidosis (IWOS). The epidemiological, clinical findings and laboratory investigations were collected based on the designed case report form. |
| Results | Of the 96 patients diagnosed having OS, 26 were definite (biopsy-proven) disease, 44 presumed disease, 24 probable disease, and 2 possible disease. 70 (73%) patients were female. Regarding the age of onset, the mean age at uveitis onset was 46.29 ± 14.45 years (range, 10–75 years), with no gender difference (p = 0.288). A peak incidence was found in the sixth decade of life. The most frequently affected ocular structure was the posterior segment, and the most common clinical signs were bilaterality (72%), periphlebitis in the posterior segment (49%), while non-granulomatous anterior uveitis is more common in anterior segment (54%). More than 70% of patients were treated with systemic corticosteroid and nearly half of the steroid-treated group were also administered with immunosuppressants. |
| Conclusion | This is the largest case series review of ocular sarcoidosis in Taiwan to date. Our findings are similar to previous reports from other ethnicity. |
