PurposeTo describe the epidemiology of uveitis in a tertiary referral center in Northern Taiwan.
MethodsConsecutive case registry in uveitis clinic of Far Eastern Memorial Hospital between July 2013 and December 2018 was identified. After excluding 33 cases of scleritis and 14 cases of masquerade syndromes, 436 uveitis cases were subsequently reviewed.
ResultsAnatomically, anterior uveitis (AU) was identified in 66.3%, posterior uveitis (PU) in 6.9%, intermediate uveitis (IU) in 1.1% and panuveitis (PanU) in 25.7% of patients. AU was predominantly unilateral (83%), while PanU more commonly presented with bilateral diseases (55.4%). The leading cause of AU was HLA-B27 association (40.8%, among them 57.6% of ankylosing spondylitis cases were identified). The most common etiology of PU was MEWDS/PIC complex (23.3%). In PanU category, the 3 leading causes were undifferentiated (23.3%), Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease (17%), and sarcoidosis (17%). Overall, 77.7% of cases were noninfectious, while 22.3% were infectious.
ConclusionIn our cohort, AU remained the majority, while IU was uncommon. Noninfectious causes were more commonly seen. Ankylosing spondylitis, VKH disease, and sarcoidosis were the leading associated rheumatological diseases. We provided substantial information regarding the epidemiological and clinical data in a country with high healthcare accessibility in Asia.
