TitleCharacteristics of Eye Wash Users with Hay Fever: A Digital Cohort Study Using a Smartphone Application
Accept poster if oral is not possible ?Yes
PurposePurpose: To investigate the characteristics of eye wash users and identify factors associated with eye wash use in patients with hay fever.
MethodsMethods: From February 2018 to May 2020, this study was conducted using the AllerSearch smartphone application for hay fever research. Application users with hay fever were included in the analysis. Data were collected via questionnaires integrated into the application, including data on users' age, sex, eye wash usage and habits, lifestyle, hay fever symptom scores, and dry eye symptom scores. Factors associated with eye wash use were evaluated using logistic regression analysis.
ResultsResults: The 9,041 individuals with hay fever were identified, of whom 40.7% (n = 3,683; 2,101 females [57.1%]) had used eye wash. Among the eye wash users, 43.9% reported using eye wash during exacerbation of ocular symptoms, 24.8% in the morning and 19.4% at night. Factors associated with eye wash usage in hay fever patients included younger age, history of mental illness, contact lens use, sleep duration of less than 6 hours, smoking, yogurt consumption, lower nasal symptom scores, higher non-nasal symptom scores, and positive dry eye symptoms. Conversely, factors associated with non-use of eye wash among those with hay fever-related ocular symptoms included older age and lower body mass index.
ConclusionConclusions: The characteristics of eye wash users and factors associated with eye wash use among hay fever patients were identified. Notably, our results indicate older participants with hay fever symptoms were not utilizing eye wash, which may have implications in setting public health awareness strategies targeting this population on the efficacy of eye wash.
