Ocular surface temperature in the projection of the ciliary body in rabbits with transpalpebral therapeutic hypothermia at 10º C
Purpose
To study the dynamics of ocular surface temperature in the projection of the ciliary body in healthy rabbits with transpalpebral therapeutic hypothermia at 10º C.
Methods
The study was conducted on 24 rabbits. For therapeutic hypothermia (contact cooling) of the eye, a thermoelectric device in the form of a monocular bandage was developed. The duration of hypothermic exposure was 30 minutes.
Results
Before hypothermia, the temperature of the ocular surface in the projection of the ciliary body was 34.19ºС, (SD 0.43). At 10 minutes, the temperature significantly decreased to 29.64ºС (SD 0.74). At 20 minutes the temperature decreased to 29.38ºС, (SD 0.72). At 30 minutes the temperature decreased significantly to 28.93ºС (SD 0.48).
After 10 minutes after hypothermia stopping temperature rose significantly up to 32.8ºС (SD=1.26) p=0.00. But there is a significant difference with the initial temperature in 1.4ºС (р=0.00). In 40 minutes after stopping hypothermia there was no temperature normalization up to initial 34.19ºС. In 20 minutes after stopping hypothermia the temperature rose to 33.47 ºС and remaining 20 minutes insignificant temperature fluctuations occurred.
Conclusion
We determined that the ocular surface temperature in the projection of the ciliary body in healthy rabbits during transpalpebral therapeutic hypothermia at 10ºС in 30 minutes was 28.93ºС. In 40 minutes after stopping hypothermia there was no temperature normalization up to initial 34.19ºС. We can see the autonomous thermoregulation and thermal stability of the rabbit's eye even with outer temperature fluctuations with direct exposure to the eye.
