Occlusive versus non occlusive retinal vasculitis: A retrospective comparative study among 409 eyes in a referral center in Tunisia North Africa
Purpose
To compare clinical features, etiologies visual outcomes and prognosis among patients diagnosed with occlusive versus non-occlusive retinal vasculitis (RV).
Methods
A monocentric retrospective comparative study. Among the 284 patients screened 123 patients were diagnosed with occlusive RV (ORV) and 161 patients were diagnosed with non-occlusive RV (NORV).
Results
Mean initial BCVA was 20/63 in the ORV group and 20/50 in the NORV group. common clinical findings were vitritis (92.6% vs 95.1) vascular sheathing (63% vs 32%) intraretinal hemorrhages (58% vs 8.6%) anterior chamber inflammation (44.4% vs 54.3) and retino-choroidal lesions (36.1% vs 35.7%). RV most commonly affected retinal veins in both groups. Most common etiologies were Behçet’s disease (32.5% vs 18.6%) tuberculosis (20.3% vs 5%) and sarcoidosis (3.3% vs 14.9%). Most common complications included macular edema (41.5% vs 38.4%) and posterior segment neovascularization (22.2% vs 4.04%).
Conclusion
In this series ORV and NORV have distinctive clinical characteristics etiological profile and outcome and prognosis.
