Clinical profile and treatment response of Neuroretinitis patients from a tertiary care eye center in South India.

Purpose
To study the clinical profile, etiology and treatment response in patients with neuroretinitis.
Methods
Retrospective study between 2010 to 2023 with mean duration of follow up of 13.5 months.
Results
75 eyes of 59 patients were studied. Mean age of onset was 31.72 ±12.7 years. 72.8% had unilateral presentation. Painless diminution of vision was seen in all 59 patients followed by
metamorphopsia in 57.6% patients. The most common clinical sign was optic disc edema in 97.3% eyes. Hard exudates as macular star was seen in 89.3% eyes and macular fan was seen in 10.6% eyes. Associated choroiditis was seen in 17.3% eyes. Retinochoroiditis was seen in 8% eyes. Tuberculosis(16.9%) and Toxoplasmosis (15.5%) were the leading causes of infectious
neuroretinitis. Idiopathic neuroretinitis was seen in 20 patients. All patients were treated with systemic corticosteroids.10 patients were treated with anti-toxoplasma treatment. 8 patients were
treated with anti-tubercular treatment. 77.58% eyes had good visual outcome of 0.40 log MAR±0.69 (P=0.0000005).
Conclusion
Early initiation of treatment results in good clinical resolution and better visual outcomes.
