TitleRetrospective analysis of patients treated with ILUVIEN (Fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implant 0.19mg) for Non-Infectious Posterior Uveitis (NIPU) at Bradford Teaching hospitals in the UK between 2019 and 2022

PurposeILUVIEN is indicated for prevention of relapse in recurrent NIPU.
MethodsData from electronic medical records was analysed on patients receiving ILUVIEN for NIPU to determine the effect on disease control and best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) recorded as ETDRS letter score. The presence of vitreous haze and AC cells were recorded at baseline and over 36 months. Adverse events including patients requiring treatment for elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) was also recorded along with the use of systemic steroid or immunotherapy (IMT).
Results34 eyes of 28 patients were evaluated with a mean age was 49.7y. Patients had received an average of 5.4 (+/- 5.7, range 2-26) OZURDEX (dexamethasone) intravitreal implants prior to their ILUVIEN. Mean BCVA at baseline was 65 letters which remained stable. 29.4% of patient were reported to have AC activity at baseline and 11.8% vitreous cells. By month 36 this reduced to 27.3% and 9.1% respectively. 41.2% of eyes were on IOP lowering medication at baseline which increased to 64.7% but only 1 eye required tube surgery. 11.8% of patients were on systemic steroid therapy and 17.6% on IMT at baseline and by 36 months this had reduced to zero and 9.1% respectively. 26% of patients required a re-injection of ILUVIEN and 56% received additional OZURDEX during the study.
ConclusionThis study demonstrates long term maintenance of vision along with a reduction in the use of systemic steroid and IMT in patients with recurrent NIPU. ILUVIEN is effective in controlling inflammation and the safety outcomes demonstrate that ILUVIEN can be repeated safely.
